Good morning, East Tennessee! It’s 09:01 AM EDT on Thursday, August 7, 2025, and as your local meteorologist, I’m rolling out your morning weather update—right now!
Happy Thursday, everybody! Sure hope you have a great day today. We’re starting the morning off with a couple of showers and maybe a few thunderstorms early, but these will fade away, and then we’ll see increasing chances for afternoon showers and thunderstorms once again. We’ve got a little bit of fog across the Smoky Mountains and up on the Cumberland Plateau this morning, so if you’re traveling there, please drive safely and give yourself some extra time. That should be about the extent of it!
This easy-to-grab blog dives deep into today’s forecast for Knoxville, Chattanooga, and the Great Smoky Mountains, then lays out the rest of the story in detail—so let’s jump in and get ready!
Today, Thursday: A Refreshing Morning with Afternoon Showers
We’re kicking off this Thursday with some comfortable morning temps in the low to mid-60s across the Tennessee-Kentucky border—feeling nice and crisp thanks to drier dew points up north that keep those morning lows down. Down in the central and southern valleys, it’s a bit mugger and warmer with higher dew points, but still pleasant. We had some early fog in the mountains, so take it slow if you’re heading that way! If you’ve got any morning shots to share, upload them on the eastTNweather app under Witcher’s Pictures—I’d love to see what you’re capturing! The day will start quiet after those early showers fade, but our futurecast model shows increasing cloud cover after lunch. Expect a few afternoon showers and thunderstorms to drift from north to south, developing across the plateau and mountains, with some possibly spilling into the valleys. Keep that in mind throughout the day—we’re looking at about a 30% chance of rain. Heavier downpours are possible on the plateau due to some atmospheric instability, but we don’t have a strong driving force yet, thanks to that lingering trough. Highs will climb to the mid to upper 80s—still below our seasonal average—making it a great day to enjoy, rain or shine. The Rest of the Story: Friday Through Sunday
Looking ahead, Friday, August 8, and Saturday, August 9, will follow a similar pattern. Morning lows will stay in the 60s, with humidity creeping up a bit, making the air feel slightly stickier. Highs will hover in the mid to upper 80s, with a 20% chance of showers or thunderstorms, mostly in the mountains and plateau. Sunday, August 10, will see a slight warmup, with highs pushing toward the upper 80s to low 90s as that ridge of high pressure starts to influence us, and rain chances drop to around 20%.
The Rest of the Forecast: Next Week and Beyond
Next week, that ridge of high pressure shifting westward from the Atlantic will take shape, bringing warmer weather. Highs will rise to the upper 80s to low 90s on Sunday, Monday, and Tuesday, August 10-12, and possibly into the mid-90s by Wednesday, August 13. Heat index values will climb into the mid-90s by Sunday and Monday, making it feel hotter as dew points rise. Rain chances will start at 30% early in the week, but a cold front might approach by the end, potentially boosting coverage if it swings through—though it’s too early to say for sure. The heaviest rain over the next seven days will hit the plateau and Smoky Mountains, with lesser amounts in the valleys. The Climate Prediction Center suggests this warmer trend could last 7-10 days, with temps near or above our 88°F average and rainfall staying light.
Looking toward mid-to-late August, the pattern will settle into a late-summer groove. Highs could reach the low to mid-90s, with heat index values around 95-100°F as humidity stabilizes. Afternoon thunderstorms will become more common, driven by heat and disturbances, offering a mix of sun and rain. If that cold front pushes through, we might see a brief cool-down or better rain, but no major shifts are on the radar yet. For Knoxville locals, Chattanooga outdoor fans, and Smoky Mountain visitors, this means enjoying today’s cool start, watching for afternoon showers, and prepping for a warmer, drier week ahead.
