Good morning, East Tennessee!

We’re kicking off this holiday weekend with another beautiful day across Knoxville, the Tennessee Valley, the Smoky Mountains, and the Plateau. The large-scale weather pattern hasn’t changed much over the past week—and believe it or not, it won’t change a whole lot as we move into the upcoming week.

Right now, high pressure is anchored across Texas while a broad trough of low pressure lingers over the Great Lakes. That combination is keeping us in a northwesterly flow, which has delivered cool, crisp mornings and plenty of sunshine over the past several days. Reinforcing shots of slightly drier air are still sneaking in, keeping that troughing influence around the eastern U.S. But for us, that simply means plenty of sunshine and very comfortable conditions for Saturday.

Saturday Forecast: Sunshine and Comfortable Warmth
We’ve had some mid-level clouds hanging around early this morning, which made for a fantastic East Tennessee sunrise. Those will slide on out as the day goes on, leaving behind lots of blue sky.

  • Morning: Temperatures started in the 50s and 60s—just a touch warmer than yesterday.

  • Afternoon: Highs climb into the mid-80s. Humidity is slowly ticking upward, but it won’t feel oppressive.

  • Evening: Dry and pleasant, around 82° by 6 PM, slipping to the upper 70s by 10 PM. A great night for football scrimmages, cookouts, or just relaxing outside.

Today is hands down the pick of the holiday weekend.

Sunday Forecast: Rain Chances Return in Spots
Sunday keeps a good mix of sunshine and clouds, but we’ll also reintroduce some afternoon showers and thunderstorms. Thanks to slightly higher humidity and instability in the atmosphere, a few storms will be able to fire.

  • Best chance for rain:

    • The mountain counties of East Tennessee

    • The Southern Valley (Athens, Sweetwater, Madisonville)

    • The Southern Plateau (Sewanee, Dunlap)

  • Elsewhere: Most of the Valley, including Knoxville, will stay mainly dry with only a stray shower possible.

No washouts expected—but if you’re in the mountains, plan for a few pop-ups during the afternoon.

Labor Day Monday Forecast: Plateau and Middle Tennessee Favored for Rain
Labor Day Monday starts off partly sunny with morning temps in the 60s. By afternoon, scattered showers and thunderstorms become a bit more likely, especially across the Plateau and into Middle Tennessee.

  • Valley locations: Lower chances, but a storm or two can’t be ruled out.

  • Plateau: Best odds for widespread showers/storms.

  • Highs: Still comfortable, topping out in the low to mid-80s.

So if you’re camping, grilling, or heading to the lakes, just be weather-aware in the afternoon.

Extended Outlook: Rain Chances Build Midweek, Then Another Cool Down
Heading into next week, a familiar pattern sets up:

  • Tuesday–Thursday: Moisture levels stay elevated with dew points in the low 60s. Expect daily scattered showers and storms, especially during the afternoons. Rain coverage around 30–40% each day.

  • Temperatures: Trending a bit cooler thanks to more clouds, generally upper 70s to near 80°.

  • Thursday–Friday: Another cold front sweeps in, bringing drier air and reinforcing that fall-like feel. Dew points drop again by late week, setting us up for another stretch of crisp, sunny days next weekend.

Dew Points & Comfort Factor
Dew points are the big driver of how the air feels:

  • This weekend: Dew points climb into the low 60s, adding a touch of stickiness.

  • Early next week: Still humid enough for afternoon storms.

  • Late next week: Another dry shot of Canadian high pressure drops dew points back into the 50s—hello, false fall round two!
