Happy Monday, folks!
As your local meteorologist, I’m rolling out the latest weather update for Monday, July 28, 2025. Today is the day we’ve been talking about—the week the heat really builds in. But here’s the good news: a pattern change by the end of the week will bring more rain along with cooler, drier air for the weekend. Like, comfortable weather—finally! This easy-to-grab blog dives deep into today’s forecast for Knoxville, Chattanooga, and the Great Smoky Mountains, then lays out the rest of the story in detail—so let’s jump in and get ready!
Today, Monday: Warm Start, Scorching Heat with a Few Storms
We’re kicking off this Monday with temps in the 70s, already delivering a warm and muggy start to the day. That thick, humid air is back, and it’s going to build quickly as the sun climbs. By lunchtime, expect temps to hit the mid to upper 80s, with afternoon highs climbing into the low to mid-90s. But with dew points also in the 70s, that heat index will push a steamy 105°F—hot enough to make you think twice about being outside too long. It’s a day to stay hydrated, seek shade, and slather on sunscreen, especially since the UV Index could hit 10 or 11, risking a sunburn in under 15 minutes without protection. Now, let’s talk rain—or rather, the lack of it. We’ve got a chance for some afternoon showers and storms today, but they should be few and far between. Keep an eye north-northwest, as that’s where they’ll be drifting in from, thanks to a lingering ridge of high pressure. Any storm that pops up might bring a quick downpour, so use the eastTNweather app’s Interactive Radar—showing past, current, and future views—to stay ahead. Download it now!

The Rest of the Story: Tuesday through Sunday
Looking ahead, Tuesday and Wednesday will echo today’s heat wave. Highs will stay in the low to mid-90s, with that muggy air keeping the heat index between 105-108°F—definitely a challenge! Humidity will linger, and we’ll have a chance for afternoon storms, though they’ll remain scattered and not widespread. For any kids playing outside in sports, coaches and parents need to pay attention to the Wet Bulb Globe Temperature (WBGT), which factors in heat, humidity, and sun exposure to determine safe practice times. Per TSSAA (Tennessee Secondary School Athletic Association) guidelines:
- Practice Limits: When WBGT exceeds 82°F, limit practice to 1 hour with a 20-minute break; above 86°F, reduce to 30 minutes with a 30-minute break; above 90°F, practice is canceled unless indoors or in shaded, ventilated areas.
- Hydration Breaks: Mandatory 3-minute water breaks every 20 minutes, with unlimited access to water at all times.
- Monitoring: Coaches must monitor players for heat stress signs (e.g., dizziness, nausea) and adjust accordingly.
- Equipment: Limit full gear (e.g., helmets, pads) when WBGT is high, opting for lighter clothing.
That pattern change I mentioned starts taking shape Wednesday. We’ll see a few more showers, but the heat sticks around. It’s Thursday and Friday that bring the best shot for rain—some decent downpours at that. We could end the week with 1-2 inches of rainfall, a welcome boost after the dry spell. A cold front moving in Friday will not only deliver this rain but also drop our humidity and temperatures, making it feel a lot more comfortable by the weekend. We’ll likely see a few afternoon storms Saturday and Sunday, but as of now, I don’t anticipate much beyond that—more of a light sprinkle than a soaker.
The Rest of the Forecast: Next Week and Beyond
Next week, that cold front’s influence will linger, ushering in cooler and drier air that should ease us into more comfortable conditions. Highs will likely drop to the upper 80s to low 90s early in the week, with the heat index falling closer to 95-100°F as humidity decreases. Rain chances will stay elevated for a few days post-front, with scattered showers possible, especially in the mornings or afternoons, but nothing extreme. As the week progresses, a weak ridge might try to rebuild, but it won’t match the intensity of this week’s heat dome. The Climate Prediction Center suggests rainfall could trend above average for the next 7-10 days, a nice shift from the recent dry pattern, while temps gradually settle into more seasonal norms.
Looking further out toward early August, we’re likely to see a return to typical summer weather. Highs will hover around the upper 80s to low 90s, with heat index values stabilizing near 95-98°F as humidity fluctuates. Afternoon storms will become more frequent, driven by daytime heating and any passing disturbances, offering a balanced mix of sun and rain. No major cold fronts are on the horizon yet, but the pattern should prevent another excessive heat wave, keeping things manageable. For Knoxville locals, Chattanooga outdoor fans, and Smoky Mountain visitors, this means planning around the current heat, then enjoying a refreshing weekend and a milder week ahead.

ABOVE AND BEYOND THE 7 DAY FORECAST
Extended Outlook: More Heat, Average Rain Chances
Beyond the 7-day forecast, the pattern looks to hold steady with above-average heat and near-normal rain chancesaccording to the latest guidance from the Weather Prediction Center. So we may not get a ton of relief from the heat anytime soon — but at least we’re not trending bone-dry.

Why This Weather’s Happening
That warm, muggy start comes from a ridge of high pressure trapping heat and humidity, driving today’s scorchers. The backdoor cold front late week will shift the pattern, bringing rain and relief by pulling in drier, cooler air. It’s a classic summer transition—hot now, but a welcome change is coming.
