Good morning, East Tennessee! It’s 08:47 AM EDT on Wednesday, August 6, 2025, and as your local meteorologist, I’m bringing you your morning weather update—right now! Happy Wednesday, everybody! Sure hope you have a great day today—it’s going to be a better day, a warmer day, with more sunshine on the way, gradually warming us back closer to those seasonal averages, which, by the way, is 88°F. Yesterday’s late-day sunshine turned out to be nice and a little toasty, right? We topped out at 84°F in Knoxville, 80°F in Crossville, 81°F in Chattanooga, and 79°F in the Tri-Cities area—below what I expected with those cloudier skies keeping us cooler. We didn’t pick up much rainfall yesterday, and this morning, there’s not a lot of action out there—most of it’s over in the Carolinas, Georgia, North and South Carolina, and parts of Virginia. We’ve had some clearing, so some sunshine is taking shape to kick off the morning, which is great news to pass along! This easy-to-grab blog dives deep into today’s forecast for Knoxville, Chattanooga, and the Great Smoky Mountains, then lays out the rest of the story in detail—so let’s dive in!

Today, Wednesday: A Warmer Start with Isolated Showers Late
We’re starting this Wednesday with some pleasant morning temps in the 60s and 70s, with the coolest, most comfortable spot up toward Tri-Cities where the dew point is a crisp 57°F—trending about two degrees cooler than yesterday, making the air feel amazing! Most other areas are a tad warmer today, thanks to a slight uptick in humidity, but it’s still comfortable. We had a bit of fog earlier, but it’s clearing out, so you’re good to go! If you’ve got any morning pics to share, upload them on the eastTNweather app under Witcher’s Pictures—I’d love to see them! The day will bring more sunshine than we’ve had, with clouds thinning out, but a little piece of energy will slide in late—think 5, 6, or 7 PM tonight. That could spark some showers, maybe a few rumbles of thunder by evening. The Weather Prediction Center has a Level 1 risk for localized flooding and flash flooding concerns, but I’m not too worried—there’s more moisture in the atmosphere, sure, but I don’t expect heavy action. At noon, it’s quiet, with maybe a couple of pop-up showers in the afternoon, but the real chance comes late. Rainfall will be light—better coverage than the last couple of days, but nothing to write home about. We need the moisture, though, with abnormally dry conditions and a bit of drought shaping up around town—the U.S. Drought Monitor drops tomorrow, so stay tuned! Highs today will push into the low 80s, aided by that solar radiation and warmer trend, with a heat index around 90°F. The Reset of the Story: Thursday Through Sunday
Looking ahead, Thursday, August 7, will see that trough sliding east, with a northwesterly flow setting in. Morning lows will stay in the 60s, and highs will again hit the low 80s, with some spotty afternoon showers and a few rumbles of thunder possible—about a 30% chance. Friday, August 8, through the weekend—Saturday, August 9, and Sunday, August 10—will shift as a ridge retrogrades in from the Atlantic. This will warm us to seasonal averages, with highs climbing to the mid-80s to low 90s by Sunday, and heat index values rising to 90°F through Friday, then potentially higher into the weekend as dew points climb.

The Rest of the Forecast: Next Week and Beyond
Next week, that ridge will strengthen, bringing warmer weather with highs in the low to mid-90s and heat index values nearing 100-105°F as humidity builds. Rain chances will drop to 20% or less, with only isolated showers possible, mostly in the mountains. The Climate Prediction Center suggests this warmer, drier trend could last 7-10 days, with temps near or above 88°F and rainfall below normal. Mid-to-late August will see highs in the upper 80s to mid-90s, with heat index values around 95-100°F, and more frequent afternoon storms. A weak front might bring a brief cool-down, but no big changes loom. Enjoy today’s warmth and prep for a drier, sunnier weekend!

Tropical Update: Eyes on the Tropics
Let’s check the tropics! We’re building to peak hurricane season on September 10. Tropical Storm Dexter is a ‘fish storm’ out in the Atlantic, heading toward Bermuda and New England—nothing for us. The National Hurricane Center watches a southeastern coast system with a 40% chance of becoming a named storm over 7 days—likely minor. A wave off Africa has a 50% chance, with models hinting at a U.S. approach by next week, but it’s too early for solid calls—watch social media, but skip those far-out model runs! ABOVE AND BEYOND THE 7 DAY FORECAST

Why This Weather’s Happening
That cooler start came from a stuck trough keeping us below average with clouds and light rain. The shifting energy and building ridge will warm and dry us out. It’s a summer pivot—cool now, warming with a late wet nudge, then drier. Stay alert!
