Happy Saturday, East Tennessee! I sure hope you’re having a great day. It’s game day, which means the orange suit is back — and so is the excitement across Knoxville and the Smokies. Let’s dive into your full weekend forecast, talk about some much-needed rain on the way, and take a look at the bigger weather pattern shaping up for the week ahead.
Yesterday was another hot one. Chattanooga officially hit 90°, Knoxville topped out at 87°, and most of us were running about 5 degrees above average for mid-September. That trend continues today with highs back in the upper 80s across the valley and a few low 90s possible in the southern spots. It’s late-summer heat hanging on strong, and while it may feel a little toasty at Neyland Stadium this afternoon, the good news is rain chances stay low for most of the day.

Your Forecast
Now, let’s talk about the rain — because it is coming. For today, we’ll keep a 20% chance of isolated afternoon showers and thunderstorms, mainly across the mountains and Plateau. Not everyone is going to see rain, but if you’re up in the higher terrain, keep an eye out for a brief storm. By Sunday, a small wave of mid-level energy will slide in from the northwest. That could help spark off a few more showers late in the day. Most of us will stay dry, but it’s enough to bump rain chances up just a touch.
The real story is the pattern change ahead. Right now, high pressure at the surface has been keeping things hot and mostly dry, but new energy aloft is starting to push eastward. That “bowling ball” of upper-level energy will swing into the Southeast by midweek, dragging moisture with it. The result: rain chances steadily increase Monday and Tuesday, then peak Wednesday through Friday with the potential for some widespread showers and thunderstorms.
The Weather Prediction Center suggests we could see 1 to 2 inches of rainfall across East Tennessee over the next 7 days — and even more beyond that. Long-range outlooks from the Climate Prediction Center are now showing above-average precipitation chances not just through the end of September but stretching into the first week of October. After weeks of dry weather, this would be a welcome change.
Here’s your 7-day forecast:
-
Saturday: High 87–89°, isolated mountain showers, hot for game day.
-
Sunday: High 86°, mix of sun and clouds, stray shower late.
-
Monday (First Day of Fall): High 86°, dry start with rain chances slowly climbing.
-
Tuesday: High mid-80s, scattered afternoon storms possible.
-
Wednesday–Thursday: Highs low to mid-80s, elevated rain and thunderstorm chances.
-
Friday: High near 83°, lingering rain with cooler air behind the system.
Even with the cooler pocket of air sliding in late week, the break may not last long. Some guidance suggests another push of heat builds back in by the final days of September. For now, though, the headline is clear: above-average temperatures continue today, but a much-needed pattern shift brings East Tennessee its best chance of rain in weeks.
