Friday-Eve Brings a Few Light Showers, Cool Air, and Even a Touch of Snow in the Smokies
Happy Thursday, everybody! Sure hope you have a great day. Our area of low pressure continues to move out, but on the back side of it, we still have some leftover moisture swinging through. That’s going to bring a few light rain showers across East Tennessee today—mainly from northwest to southeast.

If you’re traveling along Interstate 40 toward Nashville, you’ll likely encounter some light, nuisance rain this morning. Locally, we’ll see a few passing showers through late morning and early afternoon, but they’ll taper off toward the evening commute. Nothing heavy, just some damp conditions from time to time.
We’re starting the day in the 40s and will only climb into the 50s for the lunch hour. Afternoon highs will stay in the upper 40s and 50s, so it’s going to be another cool day. Winds will also be a bit breezy, shifting from the west-southwest to the west-northwest behind the front, gusting at times between 15 and 25 mph.
Now for a little mountain news—our first touch of snow is possible across the highest peaks of the Smokies today. Mount LeConte, Clingmans Dome, and Purchase Knob could see a light dusting to perhaps a half-inch or inch of snow as this pocket of cold air moves through. It’s not much, but it’s the first real sign of winter at the mountaintops.
Once today’s moisture clears out, rain chances fade overnight and stay low through much of the weekend. Another weak wave will move in late Saturday into early Sunday, bringing a few more light showers. Expect mid to high-level clouds Saturday, with improving conditions by Sunday afternoon and a pleasant start to next week.
Rainfall totals from this week have really helped cut into our rainfall deficit. Many areas have picked up between two and three inches of rain since Monday, which is excellent news for the ongoing drought conditions. The latest U.S. Drought Monitor update comes out today, and we should see improvements across East Tennessee.
Looking ahead:
-
Thursday: A few light showers, breezy and cool, highs in the 50s.
-
Friday (Halloween): Clearing skies, dry and chilly for trick-or-treaters with evening temps in the 40s and low 50s.
-
Saturday: Increasing clouds, scattered light showers late.
-
Sunday: Clouds early, clearing late, highs in the 60s.
-
Early next week: Dry, mild, and pleasant with temps in the mid-60s.
It’s shaping up to be a great Halloween night—just cool enough to feel like fall, with a chance for some clearing skies during the evening hours.
