Good morning and happy Thursday, friends!

I’m meteorologist Mike Witcher, broadcasting from the peaceful side of the Smokies, and it’s a chilly, quiet start across East Tennessee. Grab that jacket if you’re heading out early — temperatures are running 10 to 15 degrees cooler than yesterday morning.

It’s dark, calm, and crisp out there, but don’t worry — this chilly start will lead into another beautiful fall day. We do have a few clouds to talk about, but overall, the forecast is looking fantastic as we head toward the weekend.

Thursday Morning Setup – Clouds to the South, Sunshine to the North
Here’s how things are shaping up across the region today:

  • South of I-40: Expect more cloud cover, especially through the morning and early afternoon.

  • North of I-40 and closer to the Tennessee–Kentucky line: Less cloud coverage, more sunshine breaking through.

These clouds are tied to a weak low-pressure system diving southeast from the Ohio Valley, brushing across the region. Don’t worry — it’s not a rainmaker. Just enough upper-level energy to keep the skies a little more filtered with passing clouds.

Meanwhile, a ridge of high pressure over Texas and the lower Mississippi Valley is already starting to build eastward — and that’s the feature that’s going to dominate our weather pattern into the weekend and early next week.

What That Means for You
As that weak low slides out and high pressure takes control, we’re set up for a stretch of cool, dry, and tranquil weather.

  • Rain Chances: Practically zero through the next 7 days.

  • Dew Points: Staying comfortably dry, in the 40s and low 50s.

  • Wind: Much lighter today compared to Wednesday’s breezy north winds.

You might see a few mid-day clouds drifting through, especially south and west of Knoxville, but skies will gradually clear through the afternoon. The air will stay crisp and comfortable all day long.

Today’s Forecast

  • Morning: Chilly, partly cloudy (40s to low 50s)

  • Afternoon: More sun north, partly cloudy south, highs in the 70s

  • Evening: Clear, cool, and calm — perfect for a walk, outdoor dining, or an early bonfire

The Big Picture – Ridge of High Pressure Takes Over
Our weather story heading into the weekend centers around that ridge of high pressure.

You can see it building east out of Texas and into the Tennessee Valley, while a low-pressure system hugs the eastern seaboard. This setup keeps us locked under dry skies and mild afternoons, with no major storm systems nearby.

Under that ridge, air sinks — and sinking air means sunshine and stability. It also means warmer afternoons as we move through the 7-day forecast.

By early next week, that ridge strengthens even more, pushing temperatures back above average, into the upper 70s and low 80s.

Chilly Starts, Mild Afternoons
Morning lows stay cool — 40s and low 50s through the weekend — while afternoon highs climb comfortably into the 70s.

If you’re out early for work, school, or a mountain adventure, you’ll definitely feel the chill, but by lunchtime, it’ll be perfect “windows-down” weather.

7 Day Forecast Highlights

  • Thursday: Chilly start, clouds south, sunshine north, 72°

  • Friday: Sunny and mild, 73°

  • Saturday: Sunny and 75° for game day

  • Sunday–Tuesday: Warming trend continues, highs upper 70s to low 80s

  • Next Week: Ridge strengthens, staying dry and pleasant

Game Day Forecast – Tennessee vs. Arkansas
If you’re heading to Neyland Stadium this Saturday, you couldn’t ask for better weather:

  • Tailgates: 50s and sunny early in the day

  • Kickoff (4:15 PM): Around 75°, light breeze, lots of sun

  • Evening: Comfortable 60s after sunset

If you’re sitting on the east side of the stadium, keep in mind — that direct sun will make it feel warmer than the thermometer reads.

Sunny and 75 for football in Knoxville? I’ll take that every time!

Climate Trends – Dry and Above Average Ahead
According to the Climate Prediction Center, the warm, dry pattern will stick around for at least the next 7 to 10 days, with above-average temperatures favored through mid-October.

So enjoy these chilly mornings and perfect afternoons — classic East Tennessee fall weather!
