Good morning and happy Wednesday, friends!

I’m meteorologist Mike Witcher from the East Tennessee Weather Center — and yes, grab that cup of coffee because it’s hump day! We’re halfway through the week, and while the morning is starting off a little foggy, we’ve got beautiful sunshine and crisp fall air on the way later today.

Let’s get into it — we’ll talk about the fog this morning, how the sunshine returns by this afternoon, and why the rest of the week is shaping up perfectly across East Tennessee.

Foggy Morning Across East Tennessee
We’re starting off this Wednesday morning with patchy dense fog across several parts of East Tennessee — and it’s thick in a few spots.

Here’s a live view from downtown Clinton earlier this morning — visibility dropped sharply before sunrise. We’ve also seen dense fog showing up in Maynardville, Harden Valley, and portions of the southern valley as well.

The National Weather Service has issued a Special Weather Statement due to the fog. If you’re out early, take it slow — some areas may have visibility down to a quarter mile or less.

The good news? That fog will burn off quickly by mid- to late morning as the sun gets to work.

Increasing Sunshine and Dropping Dew Points
Once the fog clears, expect abundant sunshine to take over. It’s going to take a few hours, though — clouds and moisture left behind from yesterday’s cold front will linger through late morning before breaking apart.

By lunchtime, we’ll see a mix of sun and clouds — some fair-weather cumulus “cotton balls” drifting by — and then mostly clear skies by mid-afternoon. Between 3 and 7 PM, we’ll notice skies clearing nicely, setting us up for a picture-perfect fall evening.

Cooler, Drier Air Settles  In
The cold front that brought yesterday’s rain has now shifted off to our south and east, and behind it comes drier air and lower dew points.

You’ll feel it this afternoon as north winds pick up, gusting between 20 and 25 mph at times. Those northerly breezes will scour out the leftover low-level moisture, bringing that crisp, refreshing fall air we’ve all been waiting for.

By this evening and overnight, dew points will fall into the 40s, allowing morning lows Thursday and Friday to dip into the upper 40s to low 50s.

That’s the kind of air where you can finally open up the windows, enjoy the fresh breeze, and maybe even grab a light jacket for those early morning walks or evening football games.
