If you loved Tuesday’s weather, then you’re in for a treat today. Wednesday’s forecast will be much the same across East Tennessee—mild and pleasant with temperatures climbing into the mid to upper 60s. However, unlike yesterday’s gusty afternoon, today will be noticeably calmer with lighter winds across most of the region.
While many locations across East Tennessee, including Knoxville, Chattanooga, and the Cumberland Plateau, will enjoy a lighter breeze, the strongest winds will persist in Upper East Tennessee, the Tri-Cities area, and in the higher elevations of the Smoky Mountains. Wind gusts may still reach into the 20s in these spots, but overall, it will be a more relaxed day outdoors—perfect for enjoying spring’s gradual warm-up.
Looking ahead to Thursday, changes begin to roll in. A warm front lifts north through the region, pulling in some upper-level energy that will result in more clouds than sunshine across East Tennessee. While the cloud cover increases, don’t expect widespread rain. The lower levels of the atmosphere remain quite dry, so any moisture falling from the clouds will likely evaporate before hitting the ground. This phenomenon, known as virga, may look like rain on radar but won’t translate to much at the surface. A few sprinkles or a very light shower are possible, especially closer to the Tennessee/Kentucky border and areas of Upper East Tennessee.
The bigger weather headline comes as we head into Easter weekend. A ridge of high pressure, currently situated over Texas, will expand eastward. This will usher in warmer, more summer-like conditions for the Southeastern United States, including Knoxville weather, Pigeon Forge, Gatlinburg, and Chattanooga. High temperatures will climb into the upper 70s and low 80s, bringing that early summer feel just in time for the holiday.
We’ve also been tracking a stalled frontal boundary for several days, and it’s still in the picture. The latest model guidance now suggests that this front may finally dip into East Tennessee late on Easter Sunday. If that happens, we’ll see a better chance for rain late Sunday evening into early Monday morning. At this time, expected rainfall amounts remain light—generally less than 1/4 inch. That said, we’ll continue to monitor this closely, as timing and totals can shift with each forecast update.
The Easter Sunday forecast still looks great for most of the day. If you’re heading out early for a sunrise service, morning lows will be in the upper 50s to low 60s—mild and comfortable. By the afternoon, temperatures will soar to the low 80s across much of East Tennessee, making it ideal for outdoor family gatherings, egg hunts, and springtime festivities.
Looking beyond the 7-day forecast, the Climate Prediction Center continues to highlight an elevated probability of above-average temperatures for East Tennessee in the days and weeks ahead. There are also some early indicators of slightly above-average rainfall moving into the long-range pattern. This suggests we may enter a more active stretch of weather beyond the Easter weekend.
