Good morning, East Tennessee!
Happy Sunday, and thanks for checking in with your local eastTNweather update.Grab a cup of coffee, make it a great day, and let’s break down your forecast as we move through this Labor Day holiday weekend.
Today’s Setup: Clouds and Spotty Afternoon Storms
The big picture weather pattern hasn’t changed much. A weak disturbance sliding southeast out of the Ohio Valley is throwing some mid- to high-level clouds into our skies this morning. That will give us a partly to mostly cloudy look at times today, though breaks of sunshine will return this afternoon.
At the surface, low-level moisture is pooling across the Smoky Mountains, the Southern Valley, and the Southern Plateau. That’s where the best setup is for afternoon showers and thunderstorms.
-
Morning temperatures: Running a little warmer than the past couple of days, starting out in the 50s and 60s.
-
Afternoon highs: Topping out in the low to mid-80s.
-
Evening: Still comfortable—near 80° by 6 PM, 75° by 8 PM.
So, overall it’s a good day across most of East Tennessee, just keep in mind that south of Interstate 40 and in the mountains you’ll have the best chance of catching a shower or storm.
Futurecast: Timing Today’s Rain
-
Morning through lunch: Mostly dry with clouds streaming overhead.
-
Afternoon (3–6 PM): Spotty showers and storms pop up across the Smoky Mountains, Southern Valley, and Southern Plateau.
-
Evening: Activity fades quickly after sunset, leaving behind a mild and pleasant night.
If you’re headed to the Big Kahuna Wing Festival at World’s Fair Park in Knoxville (2 PM–10 PM), most of the event looks dry. A stray shower is possible, but coverage is low around Knoxville itself. Mountains and southern counties are the spots to watch.

Labor Day Monday: Plateau Gets The Rain
On Labor Day, the focus for rainfall shifts westward.
-
Morning: Mix of sun and clouds, warm start in the 60s.
-
Afternoon: Better storm chances across the Cumberland Plateau and Middle Tennessee.
-
Southern Valley & Smokies: Still a few showers possible, but coverage is less widespread than today.
-
Highs: Low 80s again for most of East Tennessee.
So if you’re camping, grilling, or heading to the lake, Monday won’t be a washout, but Plateau communities like Crossville, Pikeville, and Jamestown have a higher chance of seeing afternoon storms.
Extended Outlook: Two Cold Fronts on the Horizon
Looking beyond the holiday, the atmosphere becomes more active.
-
Tuesday–Thursday: Daily 30–40% rain chances return with scattered showers and thunderstorms. Humidity stays elevated, mornings in the mid-60s, highs upper 70s to low 80s.
-
Thursday into Friday: First cold front swings through, bringing more widespread showers and storms.
-
Friday into Saturday: A secondary cold front pushes in, delivering drier, cooler air.
This two-front system sets us up for another false fall pattern next weekend, with low humidity and cooler mornings.
Rainfall Totals Next 7 Days
Rainfall won’t be evenly distributed, but here’s what we’re watching:
-
Most Valley towns: 0.25″ to 0.50″ of rain
-
Cumberland Plateau & Southern Valley: Up to 0.75″
-
Smoky Mountains: Localized heavier totals possible
Again, the Plateau and southern counties (Monroe, Polk, Bradley) are favored for the highest rainfall.

East Tennessee, enjoy this Sunday—most of us will stay dry with just clouds and spotty storms in the mountains and southern valley. Labor Day shifts rain chances west to the Plateau, while the Valley holds onto mostly dry weather. By mid to late week, scattered storms return, followed by a pair of cold fronts that will reset our pattern with another refreshing taste of fall.
