Good morning and happy Monday, East Tennessee!
I’m meteorologist Mike Witcher, and I hope you had an awesome weekend. It’s back to the grind for many folks today, but at least we’re kicking off the workweek with another round of beautiful fall weather. This trend of sunshine, mild afternoons, and cool crisp mornings continues all week long thanks to a strong ridge of high pressure dominating the region.
If you can, get outside on your lunch break today — trust me, you’ll want to enjoy this one.
While we’re not at peak foliage just yet, the higher elevations are starting to show more reds, yellows, and golds as cooler nights continue to roll in. It’s a sure sign we’re entering one of the most beautiful stretches of the year across East Tennessee.
We capped off Sunday with another stunning sunset and highs that topped out in the upper 70s — 79 in Chattanooga, 77 in Knoxville, and plenty of mid-70s elsewhere. It was dry, comfortable, and exactly what you’d expect for mid-October.

Weather Headlines
-
Ridge of high pressure keeps us warm and dry through Friday
-
Cold front approaches this weekend, bringing a chance for scattered rain
-
Fall colors gradually brightening in the Smokies and higher terrain
-
Above-average temperatures continue into next week
The Big Picture Setup
If you’ve been following along, we’ve been talking about those coastal lows spinning off the Southeast coast the past few days — those are finally pulling away. Now, the main weather player for us is a large ridge of high pressure building in from the west.
You can see how the pattern evolves: that ridge expands eastward through midweek, holding steady across the Tennessee Valley and keeping things sunny and dry. By Friday into Saturday, it begins to flatten and shift southwest as a new trough approaches from the west.
That incoming trough will bring our next cold front, which arrives late Saturday into Sunday morning.
Today’s Forecast
-
Morning: Chilly start in the 50s
-
Midday: Sunny, near 70° by lunchtime
-
Afternoon: Warm and dry, highs in the mid to upper 70s
-
Evening: Clear skies, temperatures dropping into the 60s
It’s a great day to get outdoors — whether it’s a lunch walk, a drive through the foothills, or just soaking up some sun after work.
Looking Ahead – Cold Front on the Way
We’ll stay dry through Friday, but the weekend forecast looks a bit more active. That incoming trough will drag a cold front across the region Saturday night into early Sunday.
Ahead of it, we’ll see increasing clouds and a few scattered showers Saturday evening, followed by cooler and drier air to end the weekend. The heaviest rain looks to stay to our west and northwest, but East Tennessee will still pick up some much-needed rainfall.
We’re also keeping an eye on the potential for a few strong storms along the Mississippi River Valley late this week. The Storm Prediction Center already has a Day 6 risk zone drawn up there, and we’ll be watching to see if that risk expands eastward toward us in the coming days.
Weekend Outlook
-
Saturday: Increasing clouds, scattered showers late (30–40% chance)
-
Sunday: Clearing skies, cooler and less humid
-
Next Week: Dry air returns, but warmer temperatures may bounce back quickly
Even though this won’t be a major cold blast, it should be enough to knock humidity levels down and make it feel more like fall again by Sunday.
Temperature Trend
Average high for mid-October: 73°
This week: Mid to upper 70s through Friday, then low 70s behind the front.
Lows stay in the 50s before dropping into the 40s by Sunday morning.
7-Day Forecast Snapshot
-
Monday–Friday: Sunny, dry, and mild
-
Saturday: Clouds increase, rain moves in overnight
-
Sunday: Cooler, crisp, and mostly sunny again

Fall Color Update
The Smoky Mountains are inching closer to peak color, especially above 4,000 feet. The next week or two will be your best window to catch that vivid color transition across the higher elevations. The cooler nights behind this weekend’s cold front should help jump-start more color lower down as well.
