Comfortable Summer Weather Continues Across East Tennessee
Happy Wednesday, everybody!
If you stepped outside early this morning, you probably noticed just how incredible the weather feels across East Tennessee. The combination of cool temperatures, low humidity, and clear skies has created some of the most comfortable weather we’ve experienced in weeks.
I’m Meteorologist Mike Witcher, and today we’re going to talk about why the weather feels so good right now, how long it will last, and when East Tennessee’s typical summer heat and humidity will begin making a comeback.
The short version? Enjoy the next few days because this pleasant stretch of weather won’t last forever.

Why East Tennessee Feels So Comfortable Right Now
The current weather pattern is being driven by a large area of high pressure at the surface and a trough of low pressure in the middle levels of the atmosphere.
That setup has allowed cooler, drier air from the north and northeast to flow into East Tennessee, including Knoxville, Chattanooga, the Cumberland Plateau, and the Tri-Cities region.
This northerly flow has done two important things:
- Lowered humidity levels significantly
- Kept temperatures near or slightly below seasonal averages
The result is sunshine-filled days, crisp mornings, comfortable evenings, and very little chance of rain.
For early June, this is about as good as it gets.

Morning Temperatures Feel More Like Spring
Temperatures this morning are running 5 to 10 degrees cooler than recent mornings.
Many communities across East Tennessee started the day in the upper 50s and lower 60s, while some of the cooler mountain valleys dipped even lower.
More importantly, dew points remain low.
Dew point temperatures are one of the best ways to measure how comfortable the air feels. The lower the dew point, the less humidity you feel.
Right now, dew points are sitting at levels we would normally expect during spring rather than early summer.
Considering that June is typically when humidity begins ramping up across the Tennessee Valley, these conditions are a real treat.

Sunny Skies and Pleasant Conditions Today
The weather pattern remains very quiet today.
High pressure continues to dominate the southeastern United States, keeping storm systems well away from East Tennessee.
Expect:
- Plenty of sunshine
- Dry conditions
- Light to occasionally breezy winds
- Comfortable humidity levels
Afternoon temperatures will climb into the lower 80s across much of the region, which is right around average for this time of year.
Cities across the area should see highs near:
- Knoxville: Low 80s
- Chattanooga: Low 80s
- Tri-Cities: Upper 70s to low 80s
- Crossville: Upper 70s
- Smoky Mountains: Cooler depending on elevation

Another Perfect Evening Ahead
Tonight should be another excellent evening for outdoor activities.
Whether you’re heading to the ball field, taking an evening walk, grilling dinner, or simply enjoying some time outside, conditions will be nearly ideal.
Temperatures should still be hovering around 78 degrees by 7 p.m., with low humidity making it feel even more comfortable.
These are the types of evenings that remind us why East Tennessee summers can be so enjoyable before the deeper summer humidity arrives.

Heat and Humidity Begin Returning This Weekend
While the pleasant weather remains in place through the rest of the workweek, changes are already developing in the larger weather pattern.
The area of high pressure currently supplying our comfortable air will gradually shift toward the Atlantic coastline.
As that happens, East Tennessee will move to the western side of the high pressure system.
Meteorologists call this a “return flow” pattern.
That means:
- Winds begin coming from the south
- Gulf moisture starts returning
- Humidity levels increase
- Temperatures climb higher
You’ll notice the difference beginning Friday and continuing through the weekend.

Rain Chances Slowly Return
As humidity levels increase, so will the amount of moisture available in the atmosphere.
Rain chances remain very limited through Friday, but as we head into the weekend and early next week, isolated afternoon showers and thunderstorms will begin popping back up.
At this point:
- Rain coverage appears scattered
- Many locations may stay dry
- Some communities could receive brief downpours
- Rainfall totals generally look light
This looks more like a typical June weather pattern rather than a widespread soaking rain event.
In other words, some neighborhoods get wet while others receive little or no rainfall.

Long-Range Outlook for East Tennessee
Looking beyond the seven-day forecast, the overall pattern suggests temperatures will likely remain near or slightly above average through the middle part of June.
The Climate Prediction Center continues to favor:
- Above-average temperatures
- Near to slightly above-average rainfall
- A return to a more typical summertime pattern
That means increasing humidity, warmer afternoons, and occasional pop-up thunderstorms becoming more common as we move deeper into June.
Bottom Line
East Tennessee is enjoying a rare stretch of exceptionally comfortable June weather.
Low humidity, sunshine, cool mornings, and pleasant evenings will continue through the remainder of the workweek.
By the weekend, temperatures begin warming into the upper 80s while humidity gradually returns. With that increase in moisture will come the return of scattered afternoon showers and thunderstorms.
For now, enjoy the sunshine and comfortable air. These are the days that remind us why early summer in East Tennessee can be so enjoyable before the dog days of summer arrive.
